Job Description
Gambia is a small country in West Africa, which is surrounded by Senegal. Although most people are Muslim, they have religious freedom. WEC has been engaged in various social projects in Gambia since 1965 but nowadays is primarily involved in ones regarding the education system, translation of the Bible and literature. As a result, WEC also works in close partnership with the local church (ECG).
Project: We realized that most Gambian young boys and men love football and want to be professional football players like Messi, Ronaldo or Neymar. From this reason we started running a football club seven years ago in Brikama. We have regular training sessions and provide football shoes, uniforms, etc. We have been successful in running the football club as well as the after school classes. A large number of ‚our‘ boys have been interested in getting to know the Lord and have given their lives to Him. We’ve also planted a church in November 2016.
Tasks: Coaching our Eagles Football Club members, from Monday to Friday between 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm
Other possible involvements: teach after school classes (maths, English, computer, etc.); get involved in spiritual ministry (e.g. leading Bible study, Sunday service, etc.)
Activities: Due to the very young population, there are multiple opportunities for children and youth work. You can either participate in existing work or start your own program. The local church has a mission team, which you can support in many different ways.
Leisure activities: Brikama is quite close to the sea, so free time is presumably spend mostly at the beach! But travelling in-land is also possible, with overnight stays in travel lodges, for example.
Team: The team is made up of around 30 WEC members, who all work closely with the local church.
Churches: The ECG (Evangelical church of Gambia), which was founded by WEC some years ago. The majority of churches are found along the coast and offer various programs.
Challenges: In Africa, things do not always go as planned – or are not planned at all. You will need to learn to be flexible and spontaneous, but also willing to help with things, you didn’t expect to do. The climate is very humid and hot in the rainy season (July – October).
Special benefits: Gambians are extremely welcoming and hospitable people, with whom you can quickly feel at home (if you adapt to and respect their culture and dress code!). Also, Gambia lies directly by the sea and offers wonderful beaches to relax and unwind. Through the ministry in the football academy, you can directly connect with locals and build relationships with them.
Requirements:
- You love football or even have experience as a football-coach
- Good English skills
- Flexibility and responsibility with your tasks
